Rebuilding a sheet metal firewall in my race car
A small update but an update nonetheless. In this video, I rebuild a sheet metal firewall with a two piece design, to make future disassembly/assembly easier. This was an important step because there will be some minor sheet metal work to come in covering the fuel cell in the cockpit.

Cutting and welding the chassis to fit the new harness - finally!
Переглядів 12 тис.5 місяців тому
It’s been around five months but I finally have a new instalment in my project. Life really got in the way for a while, but now I’m back working on the car properly again. In this video, I work through the planning and fabrication for installing the correct size bushings for the new harness eyelets. This is a major step in getting the car to spec so it can be logbooked with Motorsport Australia...
Taking a punt on cheap Aliexpress hex lights for my race car garage workshop
Переглядів 37 тис.10 місяців тому
My workshop was too dim, making it difficult to clearly see what I was doing as I worked on my Speads RM11 race car. So I took a chance on some modular, hex LED lighting from China. As it turns out, it was well worth it. This video covers the unboxing and then installation of the lighting. This includes some trouble shooting and 3D printing to get the system fitted accurately. As the disclaimer...
Making a custom, removable ‘handbrake’ to handle my nuts
Переглядів 22 тис.10 місяців тому
When your race car only has a single nut to hold each wheel on, it’s really important they don’t come undone on track. You need a lot of torque, but that only makes the car roll when you apply a ratchet. In this video, I create a custom solution to hold the brake pedal down, so you can torque the wheel nuts independently at home or at the track. Purchase the Carvera CNC (affiliate): bit.ly/3CVf...
Solving some serious challenges to get a race car log book
Переглядів 30 тис.11 місяців тому
As I work my way through my to-do list, I thought it best to book an appointment with the log book inspector from Motorsport Australia, so I would get everything right the first time. This brought to light some significant issues I need to address to drive the car safely. While I could easily drive the car at a local track day in its current state, the risk of injury from a shunt is pretty big ...
Struggling through body repairs on my Formula 1000 race car
Переглядів 16 тис.11 місяців тому
Entering motorsport as a privateer on a budget means you have to do many things yourself, even if you’re not up to it. Whereas a professional workshop might have a painter employed or at least a business they trust to deliver, my attempts at finding a professional for body work repairs didn’t work out. Instead, I had to struggle through something I hate, sanding and painting. In this video, wit...
Updating my race car fire suppression system so I can drive it
Переглядів 16 тис.Рік тому
The grind begins to work through the to do list so I can drive the car for the first time. I honestly thought I’d be done by now, but installing this new fire suppression system was trickier than I thought. In this video, I walk you through the process, including designing and manufacturing some bespoke parts. Purchase the Carvera CNC (affiliate): bit.ly/3CVfsq3 Use code 'TeachingTech' for a sm...
Car racing safety gear is expensive but necessary
Переглядів 32 тис.Рік тому
If you want to go racing, you are going to need a healthy budget. Part of that budget needs to be allocated to safety gear. In this video, I go shopping for everything I need, and have each component explained by a professional. A huge thank you to Jack for allowing me to film by purchases and answering all of my questions. Thank you also to Dave for fielding my initial enquiry and helping line...

I bought a proper race car! It was harder than I thought..
Переглядів 355 тис.Рік тому
This video details the process of me buying a race car. There was a lot to research and understand, and maybe it was good I had to wait so long to sell my Sileighty, since it gave me plenty of time to be thorough. I’m beyond excited about the journey to come! Some thanks and acknowledgements: My family and friends, for listening to me ramble on about buying a race constantly for half a year. My...
TT Racing channel trailer

I've started a 2nd channel to document my journey in buying and driving a race car! If you've ever wondered what this involves, then this channel is for you. This is a passion project. Videos will be occasional, as the opportunity arises to document part of the journey. The aim is to show an honest experience, and perhaps generate some funds from ads to pay for some costs. There will not be a P...

Being american really warps your sense of scale. I've had coworkers leave the shop at around 5 pm to head on a 6 hour drive to pick up an engine for a car/bike they were working on and didn't even really think much of it. Half the time a friend or someone else from the shop would go with just for fun and the chance to help install the part when they got back.

Hi Michael. Just discovered your channel due to a thumbnail that came up on UA-cam. I own Tom’s race car he had before yours and my mate has Jim’s. We bought them when your car was under construction and I had a look at it being built in Brisbane. That would have been around 12 years ago . Tom was a pretty stocky Irishman and he would have had a tight fit in the Speed . He was a former Isle of Man TT racer and had an impressive collection of Race bikes. Good luck with your build

I am late to the party here, but if it might help... think about spraying paint like acting as a 3D printer's extruder. You would never start extruding before the head is in position, and you would always stop at the same time the head makes it to the end of its movement. Since humans are not capable of perfect near simultaneous reaction times like a printer, you solve this by only spraying while you are moving. If you keep extruding/spraying while you are positioning the head (spray nozzle) you are going to deposit material where you don't want it or need it, or pile extra material up in places. This is going to make a mess (a drip/run in the case of paint). Get in a rhythm of starting your stroke/arm movement before you push the button, and releasing the button at the end of your stroke before you stop moving your arm. Never hold the nozzle down and wave the can around. That's for kids spraying their girlfriend's name on a railroad overpass or water tower - not your race car.

Bro you can't race without a mechanic. Even if it's your flatmate or just mate (thanks Kieren Godfrey - mechanic to champions [not me]), it's not possible. You're going to come in off the track full of adrenalin, try to explain what and why, and you need a level head to make adjustments. You've already got a mate there. Bring him with you. He'll need less than the cost of tires 😂 I raced bikes for a minute and Kieren was the most important person in my life. There are so many two person jobs on track; you're definitely going to need someone else

Even if you don't have a mate there do you not think you could ask a fellow competitor to jump in the car for a sec and put the brakes on? Love your work; but don't overthink things (number 8 wire kiwi here) 😂
